Study in England – historic universities and modern education
It has its advantages to study in Great Britain. The universities and colleges there are among the world’s most famous and they are very traditional. The oldest universities, for example Oxford and Cambridge, were found between the 12th and 15th century. Today, there are more than 110 universities and 60 Colleges in Great Britain.
There is no central institution to manage university places. The applications are collected by the Universities & Admissions Application Service and sorted through a numerus clausus system. The university itself has the last word on the question if an applicant is accepted. Groups are very small with around 40 students which leads to faster successes in learning. Studies are orientated on practical experience. The academic year in Great Britain splits up into trimesters of about 10 weeks. Study terms start in September and end in June.
Study degree in Great Britain
The diplomas are divded in undergraduate studies, after which you will be rewarded with a Bachelor Degree, and the postgraduate studies. These are completed with a Master Degree. The Master degree is the requirement to achieve the Doctoral Degree after a four-year research work. Bachelor course usually go for three years. Great Britain has a different Credit system as the rest of Europe. Credit Points are given for special tests. You have to acquire 120 credit points per year.
Master programs are further graduate programs with specialization. They usually last up to two years and require 120 credit points and a Bachelor’s Degree to attend. However, you have to be aware that study in the UK is everything but cheap. Beside the costs for the study programmes, you have to pay for accommodation, food and general living costs. Of course, you may apply for a scholarship but you have to be lucky to get it.
